A Journey of Excellence: From Off-Road Trails to Legendary Status

In 2025, four decades later, the TKC 80 remains the tire of choice for demanding off-road adventures and long-distance journeys, maintaining its unwavering popularity. This iconic tire, with a massive fan base as devoted today as it was 40 years ago, is celebrating a rare anniversary in the motorcycle world.

Although the off-road scene in 1985 was worlds apart from what we know today, the TKC 80 has continuously evolved to meet higher performance standards and still amazes riders across the globe with its exceptional capabilities.

The Secret to Its Immediate Success: Its Perfect Balance for Both On-Road and Off-Road Use.

An aggressive tread pattern and a finely crafted structure are the hallmarks of this motorcycle tire, which has been delivering exceptional grip for dual-sport and long-distance off-road motorcycles—on endless trails, rugged dirt tracks, or winding rural roads—since 1985. When the TKC 80 first launched in Estoril, it garnered rave reviews from international journalists covering the event. The tire was perfectly matched to the first adventure-touring bikes of the era, with a 50% on-road / 50% off-road focus, offering consistent durability across all terrains. It was a true game-changer. This off-road tire quickly became an international recommendation.

By the 1990s, the TKC 80 had carved out a unique position in the motorcycle tire market, thanks to its unrivaled ability to balance 50% road use with 50% off-road capability.

With the TKC 80, Continental became the official tire supplier for the “Transdanubia Ride,” which took riders from Munich through Austria, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia to Hungary between 1994 and 1998, as well as for various adventure riding training courses.

Ewan McGregor, widely known for his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars, and his fellow British actor Charley Boorman chose the TKC 80 in 2004 for their epic motorcycle adventure Long Way Round. Filmed as a ten-episode documentary series, their journey took 115 days and almost 19,000 miles, covering some of the toughest routes on Earth, including the infamous “Road of Bones” from Yakutsk to Magadan on Russia’s Pacific coast.

Custom motorcycle builders also favor the TKC 80—as seen in 2012, when renowned bike customizer Wunderlich used it for their legendary “MadMax” project, based on the BMW S 1000 RR.

Evolution: Rising to the Challenge

When the TKC 80 was first launched, a BMW R 80 G/S—weighing 200 kg, producing 50 hp, and featuring an 800cc engine—was considered the pinnacle of the adventure segment. The 80/90-21 front and 120/70-17 rear tires were state-of-the-art and had to withstand a peak torque of 60 Nm. Fast forward four decades, and much has changed. The mere increase in tire dimensions—up to 120/70-19 in the front and 170/60-17 in the rear—shows how the TKC 80 has evolved to meet new demands. With motorcycles like the BMW R 1300 GS Adventure, boasting 270 kg, 145 hp, 1,300cc, and a staggering 149 Nm of torque, the performance bar has been set significantly higher for the German tire manufacturer.

“Since its introduction, we have continuously refined the tire’s specifications while preserving its distinctive and recognizable tread pattern,” says Raphael Michels, Product Director of Motorcycle Tires at Continental. These updates include ongoing improvements to the compound for better wet grip and compliance with new EU regulations, the transition to a nylon carcass for enhanced traction and comfort, and the incorporation of aramid in certain tire structures to stabilize the tread. These features have been proven and trusted by motorcycle manufacturers.

One thing that hasn’t changed: the TKC 80’s impressive mileage, its outstanding self-cleaning capability, and the confidence it provides on loose surfaces. It remains the ultimate multi-tool for both on-road and off-road use, meeting the latest EU regulations while maintaining remarkably low noise levels—a rare feature for a knobby tire, thanks to its optimized block arrangement.

It’s no surprise that renowned manufacturers like BMW, KTM, Husqvarna, and GasGas have trusted the TKC 80’s performance for decades. Today, it continues to be an OEM tire for demanding adventure bikes like the Husqvarna 701.

40 Years – A Legacy of Unmatched Success

Backed by four decades of experience and countless adventure stories from around the world, the TKC 80 remains a symbol of an unwavering spirit of discovery. Some of its most devoted fans take pride in having traveled hundreds of thousands of kilometers with the TKC 80 over the years.

“For many riders, this tire is more than just a product—it’s a trusted companion on unforgettable journeys,” says Raphael Michels. “Thanks to our continuous development, the TKC 80 remains the top choice for those who refuse to set limits.
