Four Keys to Make Sure Your Tire Is In Good Condition

What to Check On Your Tires?

Bikers should pay attention to four key aspects of their tires: low tread depth, irregular wear, damage, and cracks. These are the primary issues we observe with motorcycles parked on the street. All you need to do is take a look.

We’ve discussed on this blog multiple times about how to properly maintain your tires for longevity and optimal condition. Ensuring your tires are in good shape across these four aspects is essential for road safety. And remember, this is just as crucial whether you use your bike primarily in town or for short trips.

1. Tread Depth

There’s a simple way to ensure you haven’t gone beyond the safety limit. The tires come equipped with TWI (Tread Wear Indicator) markings on the sidewall. Locate the acronym and then inspect the same height within the tread grooves, where you’ll find raised portions (as shown in the photo). Once the wear reaches these markers, it’s time to invest in new tires.

2. Uneven Tire Wear

Tire wear isn’t always uniform; it depends on factors such as maintenance frequency (tire pressure), tire type (e.g., more or fewer treads), suspension adjustment, mechanical issues, etc. If you notice significant irregular wear, consider taking your motorcycle to a specialist who can analyze potential causes and make necessary adjustments.

3. Visible Tire Damage

A basic visual inspection of the tire can help identify any damage it may have incurred. Factors like inactivity, excessive use, incorrect pressures, prolonged sun exposure, or humidity can all contribute to tire deterioration. Regardless of age, these factors can accelerate wear, prompting the need for replacement sooner than anticipated to ensure safe riding. Perform these quick checks regularly, ideally after each ride; it takes less than a minute and costs nothing!

4. Exceeded Service Life, Worn-Out Tires

Tire warning indicators signify the wear limit. Once this indicator is surpassed, the tire must be replaced with a new one. Ignoring this can result in penalties or reduced grip and dangerous driving conditions. It’s crucial for users to stay aware of this limit, periodically checking to determine their tires’ condition.

If you notice any of these signs on your tires, it’s time to consider purchasing new ones. For more in-depth information, we recommend diving into the article on our blog.
