Technologies Developed by Continental
Since you probably associate Continental only with tires, this fact may surprise you: Continental was actually responsible for introducing the first ABS in history and implemented this technology in 1969 for cars. In 2006, Continental helped equip some its firts ABS systems for motorcycles.
Here at Continental, in addition to producing tires for cars, motorcycles, bicycles and heavy machinery, and more, we also have a very important department that develops electronics and safety systems. Within this division, there are sub-departments working on various safety, intelligence and efficient mobility technologies. This sector of Continental is in charge of responding to the company’s global campaign called VisionZero. Dedicated to safety, it aims for zero accidents, zero injuries, zero deaths on the road.

As mentioned above, in 2006 Continental launched its first anti-lock braking system for motorcycles, but it did so by taking a step forward with intelligent ABS. This integrated system acts in three steps:
- Combined braking on both wheels, even if only the front brake lever is pressed.
- The system recognizes the intention to brake and applies appropriate pressure to the rear brake.
- The system determines the braking distribution and pressures on both axles to dynamically prevent safe braking in the shortest possible distance.
We must remember that before the development of ABS, both cars and motorcycles could not brake during a turn. When the brake is applied on a vehicle without ABS, the wheels are locked, with no option to change direction, the user loses full control of the vehicle and has no option to maneuver in case of an obstacle.
Continental is always working to improve the capabilities of its tires.
